The government is in a sprint to finalize critical infrastructure projects in Homa Bay County ahead of the 2025 Madaraka Day celebrations slated for June 1.

Interior Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo has assured the public that preparations are well on course, with major works at Raila Odinga Stadium—the venue for this year’s national event—nearing completion. He noted that the State Department for Sports is spearheading the upgrades, which include construction of public terraces and a full-scale rehabilitation of the stadium pavilion, now 70 percent complete.

Dr. Omollo added that designated parking areas are 60 percent done, while the extension of perimeter walls has reached 80 percent completion.

To enhance accessibility, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) is upgrading the 1.2-kilometre Homa Bay Pier-Stadium Road and a 2-kilometre access road leading to the County Government Headquarters in Arojo.

Other roadworks under various agencies are also progressing, with KeRRA grading the 11-kilometre Wahambla-Imbo Road and the 12-kilometre Ruga-Lala Road, while KURA is repairing over 10.8 kilometres of roads surrounding the stadium.

In addition to the stadium and roads, the official residence of the Homa Bay County Commissioner—earmarked to host the State Garden Party—is undergoing an extensive facelift. Over 75 percent of the refurbishment work on the main house, staff quarters, ablution blocks, gazebo, pavements, and perimeter fencing has already been completed.

The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) is also playing its part by upgrading Kabunde Airstrip. Repairs to the fence are done, while the runway extension stands at 70 percent. Work on the passenger terminal building is underway, alongside the construction of a new apron and taxiways.

“This multi-agency effort underlines the government’s commitment to not only delivering a successful Madaraka Day event but also leaving behind lasting infrastructure that will benefit the people of Homa Bay County,” said Dr. Omollo.
