The government has ruled out any street protests on June 25 despite growing online mobilisation by Kenyan youth to commemorate Gen Z protesters who died during last year’s anti-government demonstrations.

Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura on Monday insisted the day would proceed normally, urging citizens to mark the occasion privately from their homes.

“There will be no demonstrations on June 25. Anyone who wishes to commemorate it is free to do so from their home,” Mwaura said during a morning radio interview.

He warned against criminal elements hijacking peaceful protests and called for respect towards police officers tasked with maintaining law and order.

Meanwhile, the National Police Service has taken a more cautious tone, with senior officials affirming that peaceful demonstrations will be allowed under the law.

NPS Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga warned officers against misuse of firearms, referencing the recent shooting of a hawker, while Nairobi Police Chief George Seda promised protection for peaceful marchers.

Kenya’s Constitution guarantees the right to peaceful protest, but organisers must notify police in advance as per the Public Order Act.
