In a move aimed at accelerating the country’s digital economy, the government is working with global technology firms and development partners to provide more funding and free grants for digital content creators.
On Monday, ICT and Digital Economy Principal Secretary Eng. John Tanui welcomed more than 40 digital content creators to his Nairobi office, conveying to them government plans of stepping-up in the industry to support it.
He admitted that the government along with leading technology corporations such as MET are planning on finding ways for content creators to get compensated for their work and also getting more followers on their platforms.
“We are executing our plan to enable youth to become digital entrepreneurs by equipping them with the necessary resources and opportunities such as this,” said Eng. Tanui. Then, the state is planning to invest in the largest media hub in Africa at Konza Technopolis with the idea to also build similar centers in the different regions.
Aside from high-speed internet being available in these centers, the necessary digital tools will be easily accessible to creators enabling them to get connected to the resources and the training needed to succeed in the fast-paced online world.
Eng. Tanui mentioned that the partnership of development agencies and technology giants would help to extend the availability and access to the dynamic market of youth in Kenya, which will provide them with an ample opportunity to compete globally, and thus new jobs will be created and the creative sector’s contribution to national growth will be enhanced.
