President William Ruto has outlined an ambitious plan to transform Kericho town into a city, unveiling a package of multi-sector investments worth tens of billions of shillings.
Speaking during in Kericho town, Ruto emphasized that the projects span housing, healthcare, sports, water, electricity, agriculture and road infrastructure, designed to strengthen the county’s economy and improve the lives of residents.
A Ksh 5.6 billion was allocated for the construction of the first 2,200 affordable housing units, part of a larger plan to deliver 5,000 units. A goal that will transform the town and attract investment and unlock digital opportunities through a planned Special Economic Zone
He stated Kabianga Medical School will be constructed at a cost of Ksh 1 billion, and will build Londiani and Kericho Referral hospitals that will strengthen the healthcare of the county.
Ruto also announced a major investment in sports facilities, promising the construction of the Kapkatet stadium costing Ksh 1.1 billion, with another Ksh 1 billion allocated for another stadium in Kericho town.
The facilities are expected to nurture local talent, host community and national events while promoting sports as both recreation and industry.
Another investment in the County is the construction of Kapkatet and Litein water projects that have secured Ksh 1.6 billion, with another Ksh 400 million for the town. 16,000 households in the county, will have an access of Ksh 1.6 billion electricity program.
As agriculture remains one of the pillars of Kenya’s economy, the ongoing reforms allow farmers to emerge as top coffee earners generating Ksh 6 billion in revenue.
To support the growth of the county, Ruto launched the construction of the 34 km Panda Pilis-Kampala/Bokoiyot-Mabasi road in Bureti Constituency, Kericho County. A road that will ease the movement of farm produce to markets, reduce transport costs and strengthen agricultural value chains.
