The government has announced that construction of the long-delayed 170-kilometre Rironi–Mau Summit expressway will officially begin within the next three months.

Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir confirmed that a contractor will be on-site in the coming weeks, signaling the government’s renewed commitment to easing congestion along the critical Nairobi–Nakuru transport corridor.

Speaking in Naivasha during a meeting with the Senate Committee on Roads and Transport, CS Chirchir emphasized the importance of the Rironi–Mau Summit expressway as a vital infrastructure project.

He noted that the road, once completed, will help decongest the highway and enhance the movement of goods and passengers between Nairobi and the Rift Valley region.

This announcement comes amid ongoing negotiations to terminate a previous contract awarded to a French consortium under the former administration. The government is seeking to reassign the project to a new contractor to fast-track its implementation.

The development follows a major traffic gridlock that paralyzed transport along the busy highway for over 15 hours. The National Police Service (NPS) attributed the snarl-up to heavy rains starting from 4:00 p.m., coupled with two non-injury accidents and motorists’ failure to observe lane discipline.

In a statement, NPS spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga confirmed that traffic had since resumed after police intervention. He urged motorists to remain patient, adhere to traffic regulations, and consider alternative routes during such occurrences.

The Rironi–Mau Summit expressway is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Nairobi and Nakuru, improve road safety, and boost regional trade once
