The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has unveiled plans to promote an additional 28,288 teachers across various grades in 2025, continuing its commitment to fostering professional development within the education sector. This latest promotion initiative brings the total number of teachers promoted over the past two years to 59,792, underscoring the TSC’s ongoing efforts to recognize and reward the dedication of educators.
During the release of the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exam results, TSC Chairperson Jamleck Muturi highlighted that these promotions reflect the commission’s dedication to improving the professional growth of teachers. “We encourage all eligible teachers to seize this opportunity to enhance their careers,” Muturi stated, adding that the promotions are part of a broader strategy to strengthen the education system.
The TSC’s promotion plans are made possible by increased government funding, which has allowed the commission to prioritize capacity building and professional development for educators. Muturi also shared that over 229,000 primary school teachers are currently undergoing retooling, with an additional 60,000 junior secondary school teachers being trained to better align with the newly implemented Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
“These programs are crucial in ensuring that our teachers have the skills needed to effectively implement the CBC and meet the diverse needs of our learners,” Muturi explained.
The announcement comes on the heels of a significant year for the education sector. The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) reported a 7.19% increase in the number of candidates registering for the 2024 KCSE exams, with 965,512 students taking part—the highest increase in enrollment since 2020.
With the TSC’s ongoing investments in teacher development and the rise in student enrollment, the education sector continues to demonstrate significant progress in enhancing both teaching quality and student outcomes.
