On Friday, January 10, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba responded to questions about the possibility of adjusting the C+ cut-off grade for public university admission, following a significant increase in the number of students qualifying for university entry in 2025.

Speaking to the press, Ogamba made it clear that there are no plans to change the current cut-off grade of C+ for public university admission, despite a rise in the number of students achieving this score. The number of students qualifying for university has grown from 201,000 to 246,000, a 22% increase from the previous year.

“The increase in the number of students joining universities next year is substantial, rising from 201,000 to 246,000. This means universities will have to accommodate more students, but we will maintain the C+ grade as the minimum entry requirement for public universities,” Ogamba confirmed.

The Education CS also acknowledged the challenges universities face due to this surge in enrollment, particularly with regard to limited public funding for higher education. He emphasized that the ministry is working on solutions to address the increased demand while managing the financial constraints faced by public institutions.
