The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has closed the Marigat–Loruk highway after flooding swept across a section of the road.
In a statement on Thursday, August 21, KeNHA said the flooding was caused by the rising water levels of Lake Baringo following several days of heavy rains in the area. The spillover has made part of the busy highway impassable.
Motorists using the road have been asked to take alternative routes, including the diversion through Loruk–Chemalingot road. KeNHA also urged road users, both drivers and pedestrians, not to risk crossing the flooded section for their own safety.
“We will continue to monitor the situation and advise once water levels reduce,” the Authority said, adding that it is working to ensure safe and smooth movement of people and goods.
The closure comes after residents raised concerns, saying the highway was at risk of being cut off completely.
Locals say the swelling lake has been rising steadily since June, and the situation is now threatening their safety.
“Right now, the lake water has covered parts of the road. We are also fearful of hippo and crocodile attacks that are now reaching homesetads,” explained a resident.
The flooding has also affected day-to-day life, with children unable to go to school and residents struggling to get to shops.
This latest closure comes hot on the heels of KeNHA’s announcement of a six-month traffic disruption on the same road to allow for the construction of a box culvert.
