Contractors involved in major road projects in Kilifi County have been ordered by the government to hasten the construction workwithout lowering the quality as the government is eager to energize the economic potential of the region.
Coast Regional Commissioner, Onyancha gave the instruction while on a tour inspection the ongoing infrastructure projects in the county.
She ordered works to be going on all day and night so as the delivery can be timely.Onyancha arged contractors to make the priority durability of the works by using the effective drainage systems that can bear the bad weather conditions.
One of the major development projects is the multinational highway Mtwapa-Kwa Kadzengo-Kilifi section which connects Kenya and Tanzania which is 76 per cent done.
7. 5 billion KSh project had a standstill for a long time due to the problems of acquiring the land. However, the National Land Commission together with the Kenya National Highways Authority are still working on the compensation of the persons affected.
The project also entails the widening of the Mtwapa road into a dual carriageway, the erection of bridges and the establishment of a new weighbridge at Kanamai which is expected to reduce traffic congestion and enhance the efficiency of the corridor.
However, Bamba-Ganze-Kilifi road only progress a little bit more of 26 per cent. According to Onyancha, after completion, this road projects will likely open up the region to market places, hospitals and schools thus leading to socio-economic growth.
The authorities have expressed concern about the rising encroachment on road reserves warning that if the trend is not quickly checked, it may hamper progress and escalate project costs.
