The government says it is open to dialogue with the media, in efforts to foster national cohesion and responsible journalism.
ICT and Digital Economy Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo made the remarks during a media stakeholders’ forum held in Nakuru on Friday evening.
He engaged with the leadership of the Kenya Editors’ Guild (KEG), Association of Media Women in Kenya (AMWIK), and the Kenya Union of Journalists (KUJ), alongside the (MCK).
Kabogo emphasized the need for mutual engagement between the state and media houses.
He noted that while the right to protest is enshrined in the Constitution, it must be exercised peacefully and responsibly. “I urged the media to prioritise the protection of public interest, particularly children’s rights, when reporting.” said Kabogo
Kenya Editors Guild President Zubeidah Kananu urged for a safe and supportive working environment for journalists, free from threats and intimidation. Kabogo advocated for responsible media reporting that respects the right to press freedom.
Kabogo reaffirmed the government’s support for media operations and freedom in the country. He was accompanied by MCK CEO David Omwoyo, Kenya Editors Guild President Zubeida Kananu, Kenya Union of Journalists Secretary General Erick Oduor, and Association of Media Women in Kenya (AMWIK) Executive Director Queenter Mbori among others.
