The Ministry of Agriculture has announced plans to purchase one million bags of maize from farmers nationwide at Ksh 3,500 per 90 kg bag.
This initiative aims to bolster the national strategic food reserve, which currently stands at only 30% of its target capacity.
Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Andrew Karanja stated that this effort not only seeks to enhance food security but also provides essential financial support to farmers.
This strategy aligns with the government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda, which focuses on increasing farmers’ profit margins and promoting economic stability in the agriculture sector.

In a circular issued on October 31, the ministry indicated that the established purchase price is expected to help stabilize maize flour prices across the country.
Projected yields for the year are estimated at 75,972,332 bags of 50 kg maize, which could play a crucial role in addressing future supply challenges.
