Small-scale tea farmers across the nation can now rest easy after the Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA) confirmed that farmers will receive their final payments by Wednesday, October 15, 2025.
KTDA said in a statement on Tuesday, October 8, that the payments will be directly credited to farmers’ bank accounts. The payment includes the final bonus for the 2024/2025 financial year, as well as payments for green leaf delivered in the last month.
“Following the close of the financial year and approval by factory boards, the ultimate green leaf payments will be deposited in farmers’ bank accounts by October 15,” the agency stated.
PS Rono: Payments Must Be Transparent
The announcement follows an order by Agriculture Principal Secretary Kipronoh Rono, which forced KTDA to have the money reflected openly in farmers’ payslips.
You are to remit the money in a fair manner and indicate it in the payslip as ‘GOK Refund’,” Rono directed, insisting on transparency and accountability in the process.
KTDA also revealed that part of the money disbursed includes funds recovered from the collapsed Imperial Bank and Chase Bank. The two banks were placed under receivership in 2016, and a lot of farmers’ money had been frozen for years.
Through government intervention, the Kenya Deposit Insurance Corporation (KDIC) has since paid out Ksh2.7 billion, which will be distributed among the farmers.
“The funds recovered from Chase and Imperial Banks have been received from KDIC, and we appreciate the efforts of the government in making the same possible.” KTDA added.
President William Ruto officiated the initiation of payout of the recovered fund on September 11, instructing KTDA to transfer the amount to its owners mostly farmers in regions that have received lower bonus payments lately, especially in the West of the Rift.
The Ksh2.7 billion payout is expected to ease the pain of farmers who are grappling with higher costs and lower incomes.
