Party of Democratic Unity (PDU) National Chairman Isaiah Gichu has expressed doubts about former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s ability to consolidate Mount Kenya’s support ahead of the 2027 elections, citing his confrontational style and past missteps.
Gichu noted that while Gachagua has positioned himself as a defender of the region, his approach could alienate voters who prioritize pragmatism over personal grievances.
“Mount Kenya voters are pragmatic. They will not back a leader who seems to be acting out of personal grievances rather than a clear agenda for the region,” Gichu remarked during a press briefing.
The recent meeting between President William Ruto and former President Uhuru Kenyatta, Gichu argued, could reshape the region’s political dynamics.
“If Uhuru decides to play an active role in the politics of the day, it could significantly challenge Gachagua’s influence,” Gichu observed.
However, he noted that Gachagua’s survival would be possible if Uhuru remains on the sidelines.
Despite his criticism, Gichu acknowledged that Gachagua could still retain support if he manages to convince voters of his broader vision for Mount Kenya.
“Gachagua has an opportunity to align his agenda with the region’s aspirations. But he must tone down his confrontational style and focus on delivering results for the people,” Gichu added.
