Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has claimed that his Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) is gaining momentum after a group of elected leaders from Kirinyaga County announced they would seek re-election on the party’s ticket.
Speaking at his Wamunyoro residence on Thursday, Gachagua welcomed a delegation of Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) led by Kerugoya Ward MCA Eric Muchina, describing the move as a major boost to the party’s growing influence ahead of the 2027 General Election.
According to Gachagua, the leaders resolved to join DCP as the party continues its grassroots mobilisation across the Mt Kenya region and other parts of the country.
The delegation included Jinaro Njamumo (Mutithi), Peter Karinga (Tebere), Peter Weche (Wamumu), Geoffrey Wadaudi (Kiine), Thomas Mwangi (Mukure), Fredrick Maina (Inoi), Jeremiah Makimi (Kariti), Dr. Isaiah Mbogo (Kabare), James Wambu (Kangai), and nominated MCA Gichangi Bosco.
“The DCP wave continues to wreak havoc and shake Kenya Kwanza to its core,” Gachagua said in a statement shared after the meeting.
He added that the leaders had affirmed their intention to defend their seats on the DCP ticket, a move he said reflects the party’s growing support ahead of the next general election.
The latest defections come as Gachagua steps up efforts to strengthen DCP’s presence across the Mt Kenya region, where political realignments are expected to shape the 2027 presidential race.
The Kenya Kwanza coalition has yet to respond to Gachagua’s claims regarding the latest political shift in Kirinyaga County.
