Former Health Chief Administrative Secretary Dr. Mercy Mwangangi has officially assumed office as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Social Health Authority (SHA), marking a new chapter in Kenya’s journey toward Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

Dr. Mwangangi takes over from Dr. Robert Ingasira, who had been serving in an acting capacity. The transition was formalized during a handover ceremony officiated by the Principal Secretary in the State Department for Medical Services, Dr. Ouma Oluga.

Speaking during the event, Dr. Oluga underscored the critical role of SHA in shaping Kenya’s healthcare landscape, urging the agency to deliver a robust framework that upholds the right to health and accelerates the realization of UHC.

“The Social Health Authority must lead by example in fostering a culture of discipline, hard work, and excellence in service delivery,” said Dr. Oluga, while pledging full government support to the Authority’s leadership.

SHA is tasked with managing the country’s social health insurance framework, a key pillar of the government’s broader health sector reforms aimed at ensuring equitable access to quality healthcare services.

Dr. Mwangangi, a public health expert with years of leadership experience, is expected to steer the agency through a transformative period as Kenya scales up health financing reforms.
