Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has expressed renewed confidence in reclaiming justice following a key legal victory at the Court of Appeal regarding his controversial ouster from office.
The court overturned a decision by Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu, made on October 18, 2024, that had constituted a three-judge bench to hear a petition challenging Gachagua’s removal.
The appellate court instead directed the matter be referred to Chief Justice Martha Koome, who is constitutionally mandated to empanel such a bench.
Addressing congregants at a church service in Juja, Kiambu County, on Sunday, Gachagua said he remains hopeful that the judiciary will offer him a fair hearing and ultimately clear his name.
“The framers of the 2010 Constitution created four levels of judicial intervention — the Magistrate’s Court, the High Court, the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court — so that if you don’t get justice in one, you’ll get it in another,” he stated.
He affirmed that there are still judges of integrity who will uphold justice, not just for him, but for the people of Kenya.
The embattled former deputy president further revealed that he is in the process of forming a new political party ahead of the 2027 General Election, with the goal of unseating President William Ruto. According to Gachagua, the party will bring together key opposition leaders and former senior officials.
“I want to assure you that the coming elections are set. I am there, Kalonzo [Musyoka], Karua [Martha], Matiang’i [Fred], and Wamalwa [Eugene] are there. We will sit and agree on one person,” he said, urging supporters to pray for unity among opposition leaders.
Gachagua also hinted at working closely with former Agriculture CS Mithika Linturi, ex-Public Service CS Justin Muturi, and former Trade Minister Mukhisa Kituyi.
