Homabay Town has taken center stage this week as it plays host to the national Madaraka Day celebrations, a momentous event that has drawn leaders from across the country.

The festivities, preceded by the Blue Economy Summit, have not only placed the county in the national limelight but also presented a golden opportunity for the region to showcase its potential.

Locals have hailed the decision to host the celebrations in Homabay as timely, citing it as a gateway to greater national visibility and economic growth. The week-long activities have revived interest in the town’s rich history and transformation over the years.

Homabay Town traces its roots to a small fishing village serving the Luo community, nestled near the scenic Homa Hills and Lake Victoria. Its proximity to the lake made it a key hub for fishing and small-scale agriculture, laying the foundation for its growth.

During the colonial era, the town rose in significance as a British administrative post due to its strategic location, boosting trade and infrastructure. In the post-independence period, Homabay became the headquarters of South Nyanza District, cementing its administrative importance.

The advent of devolution later designated the town as the capital of Homabay County — a development that has been instrumental in shaping its modern identity.Today, Homabay is witnessing a steady transformation.

Modern infrastructure and social amenities are emerging, including a well-organized bus park and an upgraded trading center for small-scale traders. One of the most notable developments is the Sh400 million Homabay Fish Market.

With a capacity of 400 traders, the market has improved dignity for the fishing community and brought much-needed order to fish trade.

Strategically positioned next to the rehabilitated Homabay pier, the fish market is seen as a catalyst for the growth of the blue economy and maritime trade.

Road expansions and housing projects, such as the national government’s affordable housing initiative, are also giving the town a facelift and attracting new investors.

Landmarks like the Governor’s Park, the arboretum, and the iconic Raila Odinga Stadium underscore the town’s growing stature
