The Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition has announced a major restructuring that has seen several senior politicians removed from key leadership roles within the coalition.
The decision was reached during a joint meeting of the coalition’s Council and National Executive Committee held on Monday, March 9.
According to the coalition, the changes were necessary after some leaders took up government positions or aligned themselves with rival political formations. Among those affected are Mining Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho, nominated MP Sabina Chege, Suna East MP Junet Mohamed and Abdi Noor Omar Farah.
Several other leaders were also dropped from the National Executive Council, including Cooperatives Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya, MPs Adan Keynan, David Pkosing and Mishi Mboko, as well as Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi. Also removed were Abdul Haji, Isabella Wangechi Githinji, Caroline Wanjiru Karugu and Solomon Kuria.
The coalition said new appointments to fill the vacant positions will be announced later as part of efforts to strengthen its organisational structure.
As part of the changes, Caroli Omondi was appointed leader of the Azimio Parliamentary Group in the National Assembly of Kenya, replacing Junet Mohamed. In a notice signed by the coalition party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, the reshuffle was described as a move aimed at sharpening the coalition’s strategy and improving coordination ahead of upcoming national political engagements.
