Schools in Gatundu South are slowly going back to normal following a series of disturbances that led to their closure in the last few weeks. Education and security officials, together with area Member of Parliament Gabriel Kagombe, held a crisis meeting that not only allowed the affected schools to open but also outlined the steps necessary for restoring calm.
The unrest resulted in the burning of dormitories and destruction of property in several schools. These included Ucekeini Girls, Gathiru Boys, Muhoho Boys, and Mururia Boys High School.
Indiscipline to be the main cause of the rebellion that may have been started by several other factors such as pressure on students due to exams and reporting deadlines that were not liked by the students as well as the frisking that had been strictly implemented and had caused resistance among the students who had not been frisked.
The officials declare that the new actions will not only respond to the issues of concern but also help in the discipline of the students so that learning can be carried out without any hindrance as schools get ready for the national examinations.
The stakeholders have requested the cooperation of parents, the teaching fraternity, and pupils to maintain the peace that has been established so far and also warned that if any more incidents of unrest should happen, strict measures will be taken against the perpetrators.
