Traders and residents of Kagio in Ndia Constituency have welcomed the ongoing expansion and modernization of Kagio Market, a major project expected to ease congestion and transform the fresh produce trading hub.

The two-storey market, currently under construction, is a joint initiative between the County Government of Kirinyaga and the National Government under the Economic Stimulus Programme.

The modern facility is part of a series of development projects launched by President Dr. William Ruto during his recent tour of the Mt. Kenya region.Speaking to local media, traders expressed optimism about the project’s impact on business. “The congestion we used to face made it difficult to operate. With this upgrade, we are confident it will improve the working environment and attract more customers,” said one trader.

The KSh 357 million market will feature a range of modern amenities including internet connectivity, a reliable water supply, toilets, electricity, and a perimeter wall to enhance security. The facility’s capacity has been expanded from 1,500 to 3,000 traders, positioning it as one of the largest fresh produce markets in the region.

Construction of the market is progressing swiftly, with completion expected by May next year. The project aligns with the Kenya Kwanza administration’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda, aimed at empowering grassroots traders and boosting the local economy.

Kirinyaga County officials have lauded the national government’s support, noting that the new market will not only benefit traders but also create employment opportunities and enhance the region’s economic profile.
