First Lady Mama Rachel Ruto has called on Kenyans to embrace a blend of indigenous knowledge and modern farming techniques to enhance food production and improve household nutrition.
Speaking during the national rollout of the Mama Kitchen Garden Program at the Koibatek Agricultural Training Centre in Eldama Ravine Constituency, the First Lady emphasized the importance of sustainable and innovative farming methods.
She urged families to adopt home gardening practices that will ensure a steady supply of nutritious food.“By combining traditional agricultural wisdom with modern innovations, we can empower households to grow enough healthy food in their own backyards,” said Mama Rachel Ruto. “This approach will not only help us tackle food insecurity but also improve nutrition and cognitive development, especially among young learners.”
The First Lady highlighted the critical link between proper nutrition and the physical and mental growth of children, noting that malnutrition negatively impacts academic performance and overall well-being.
To support the program, Mama Rachel Ruto said the Ministry of Agriculture, in partnership with development partners, will provide training, seeds, farming tools, and extension services to participating households across the country.
These efforts aim to equip communities with the knowledge and resources needed to establish and maintain productive kitchen gardens.
The Mama Kitchen Garden Program is part of a broader initiative to promote food self-sufficiency and climate-smart agriculture at the grassroots level, particularly among women and youth.
