The reggae music industry in Kenya has lost one of its pillars, MC Fullstop, whose real name is John Maina, who succumbed to tuberculosis August 1, 2025, after a strenuous and long battle.MC Fullstop was the giant of Kenya’s dancehall and reggae music. With his unmatched energy and unique voice, he was a regular on the radio and live events, hyping up crowds and pushing home-grown artists. His passing marks the end of an era in Kenyan entertainment.

His health problems began in 2021 when he was diagnosed with pulmonary TB, which caused his left lung to completely collapse. He had only one functioning lung left, but Fullstop did not give up, determined to fulfill his aspiration. In 2022, things took a worse turn as TB reached as far as the throat and had a tremendous effect on his voice as well as making simple daily activities such as walking and talking a nightmare.

In spite of all these challenges, he remained so positive and continued to interact with fans, even sending death speculations packing earlier this year by strongly reminding the world that he was still in the fight. He openly conceded that his condition was irreversible and joked that he was going to retire from the spotlight.

Tributes have flooded social media across the nation, with other performers like DJ Juan observing: “Rest in peace MC Fullstop. Legend.”MC Fullstop’s legacy is far beyond music. The beat he initiated will remain in the hearts of his fans and the beats of Kenya’s reggae world.
