DCI Arrests Man After Viral Video of Tearing KSh100 Notes on TikTok

A man has been arrested after a video that went viral on TikTok showed him destroying Kenyan currency.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations arrested the man through the video that is about 27 minutes long. In the video, the man is seen placing several bundles of money on the table, mostly KSh100 notes, and then proceeds to tear them apart.

The DCI announced that the man was caught by detectives from the Banking Fraud Investigations Unit, which deals with cases involving financial crimes and the misuse of money.

“Banking Fraud Investigations Unit detectives have arrested a man who was wanted for allegedly mutilating Kenyan currency notes and sharing the acts on TikTok,” the DCI announced on Tuesday, dated March 10.

The man is in custody and will be presented in court as soon as the processing is complete.

Under Kenyan law, the destruction of the Kenyan currency is illegal and includes tearing, cutting, writing on, and stapling the money.

The Central Bank of Kenya is the body mandated with the protection of the Kenyan currency and has over the years warned against the misuse and abuse of the Kenyan currency.

Earlier, the Central Bank of Kenya, on February 2, warned against the misuse of cash as decorations, such as cash bouquets, during celebrations.

According to the Central Bank of Kenya, the misuse and abuse of the Kenyan currency can be seen when people fold the money, glue it, and then staple it, which can cause problems with the money when it is inserted into the ATM.

The Central Bank also warned that the misuse and abuse of the Kenyan coin can be seen when someone decides to change the weight of the coin and that the misuse and abuse of the Kenyan coin is an offense that can cause someone to go to jail for seven years.
