A suspected illegal firearms dealer has been arrested at the Kanyonyo Vehicle Checkpoint along the Nairobi-bound route after police recovered firearms and a large cache of ammunition from his vehicle.
According to National Police Service (NPS), the suspect was nabbed at the checkpoint and arrested while driving towards Nairobi following a selective security operation by police there.
The police found several guns with tons of ammunitions during a police inspection of the car. The confiscation interfered with an illegal flow of weapons supply chain into Nairobi and neighbouring areas.
Furthermore, the National Police Service said the arrest is an important progress in fight against organized crime and efforts to reduce the flow of illegal guns that are used in violent criminal actions.
However, pleliminary investigations indicate that the suspect is allegedly a key figure in the illicit trade of firearms and ammunition, with investigators linking him to the sale, supply, and distribution of illegal weapons across multiple regions.
NPS reiterated its pledge of protecting the citizens by stepping up intelligence, guided policing operations against the criminal gangs engaged in the smuggling of illegal guns and ammunition at the whole country level.
