The Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli has lauded President William Ruto for canceling government deals with the Adani Group.
The Indian conglomerate had entered into a partnership with the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO) to operate power transmission infrastructure and with the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) to renovate the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
However, during his State of the Nation address on Thursday, November 21, Ruto suspended the engagements with the company after being implicated in malpractices.
In a statement on Friday, Atwoli termed the cancellation a bold, timely and unequivocal action.
He said the decision has restored the confidence of workers across all sectors but mostly those represented by the Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) under KAA who were afraid of losing their jobs after the Adani takeover.
“We wish to remind all agencies of the State and Government that proper consultation with workers is a must prior to any strategic reforms,” said Atwoli.
