The Kenya Union of Commercial Food & Allied Workers (KUCFAW) has suspended long-serving Boniface Kavuvi from his position as general secretary for violating labour relation laws.
In a statement released by the union, the National Executive Committee (NEC) resolved to suspend Kavuvi during a meeting held on May 29, 2025.
The decision was made after the NEC found him in violation of both the union’s constitution and the Labour Relations Act.
“KUCFAW wishes to inform the public, members, and social partners of recent changes in the union’s leadership. Following a duly convened meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC), a resolution was passed to suspend Bro. Boniface Kavuvi from his position as General Secretary,” read the letter from the union signed by Acting General Secretary Kinuya M’Mukiri.
In a new list seen by The Star, titled Extract from the Register of Trade Unions, Officers, Committee Members, and Trustees, Andrew Kinyua M’mukiiri will serve as the acting general secretary.
However, the letter failed to identify the specific violations that Kavuvi has contravened.
“The decision was reached after the NEC found Bro. Kavuvi to have violated the Union Constitution and the Labour Relations Act,” read the letter
The union, an affiliate of COTU-Kenya, said that pursuant to this resolution, the changes in leadership have been formally effected and registered by the Office of the Registrar of Trade Unions.
“In line with this, Bro. Andrew Kinyua M’mukiri (the undersigned) has been gazetted by the Registrar of Trade Unions as the Acting General Secretary of the Union and will henceforth perform all functions and duties associated with the office of the General Secretary,” the statement reads.
Prior to this acting role, Kinyua served as the first Deputy General Secretary of the Kenya Union of Commercial, Food & Allied Workers.
Meanwhile Abdullahi Kiptonui will continues serving as the National Chairman, while Rebecca Nyathogora will remain the unions National Treasurer
