Eldoret becomes Kenya’s fifth city after Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu and Nakuru.
The Home of Champions is now the country’s fifth city. President William Ruto awards city charter and seal to the town that is also Uasin Gishu County headquarters.
“Eldoret ascends to city status at a time when 50% of humanity lives and work in urban areas, making the 21st Century an urban century. As the city of champions, it is essential that Eldoret focuses on the great opportunities and significant challenges ahead, not only because the future is urban, but also because it has what it takes to emerge as the ultimate city of the future,” President Ruto said
Eldoret is a significant urban area in Kenya; it is the second largest medical destination in Kenya after Nairobi. Its international airport is ranked as the second busiest cargo airport after JKIA in Nairobi.
Eldoret serves as the capital of Uasin Gishu County, Located in western Kenya, and lying south of the Cherangani Hills.
