A church in Kapkwen, Bomet County, has been shut down following disturbing reports that members were allegedly subjected to violent caning in an attempt to exorcise evil spirits. The incident unfolded after two women, both members of the church, fled from the altar in distress when they could no longer endure the mob beatings allegedly administered by their pastor.

The two women managed to escape and later reported the assault to the Kapkwen Police Station, prompting an immediate police response. The incident has drawn widespread attention and concern from local authorities.

Bomet County Police Commander Edward Imbwaga confirmed the closure of the church on Friday, as investigations into the allegations continue. He also indicated that police are currently looking for the suspects involved in the brutal act and are working to determine whether the church is legally registered and how long it has been operational.

“The search for the suspects continues, and we are also investigating whether the church is registered and operating legally,” Imbwaga said. “We have found that the majority of the church’s members are women.”

Meanwhile, the two women who escaped the violent ordeal were taken to a local hospital in Bomet, where medical professionals confirmed they had sustained several bruises and injuries. County Chief Officer for Health, Felix Langat, noted that the women arrived at the hospital with visible injuries all over their bodies, including bruises on their legs and cheeks.

“They had bruises on their legs and cheeks, indicating they had gone through a lot,” Langat said. “They received medical attention and were later referred back to the police to complete a P3 form for assault documentation.”

The incident has sparked outrage among local residents, who are calling for a crackdown on such questionable religious practices in the area. Police have urged any other potential victims of similar incidents to come forward and report them immediately.

As the investigation continues, the authorities are working to ensure that the proper legal actions are taken against those responsible and to prevent such disturbing practices from continuing in the community.
