Pope Francis had a “peaceful” night and was well-rested, according to the Vatican, but his condition remains “critical.”

The 88-year-old pontiff’s health has worsened since Friday, as he battles a “prolonged asthma-like respiratory crisis.”

He is currently receiving treatment for pneumonia in both lungs at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome.

The Vatican stated that blood transfusions were required due to a low platelet count linked to anaemia.

Despite his condition, the Pope remains alert and spent the day in his armchair, though he requires “high-flow” oxygen. His prognosis is still uncertain.

“The Holy Father’s condition remains critical,” the Vatican confirmed, adding, “The Pope is not out of danger.”

This marks the most detailed and sombre statement yet regarding the Pope’s health.

While the Vatican has been providing daily updates, the tone of these releases has varied, leaving many to speculate.

Pope Francis was admitted to the hospital on February 14 after experiencing difficulty breathing for several days.

He is particularly vulnerable to lung infections due to past health issues, including pleurisy and the removal of part of his lung at the age of 21.

The Pope, who has been hospitalized multiple times during his papacy, most recently in March 2023 for bronchitis, has asked for transparency about his condition, prompting the Vatican to share these updates.

Catholics around the world are closely monitoring the situation, deeply concerned for the Pope’s well-being.
