From early Thursday morning, jubilant supporters thronged Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, eager to receive the former Deputy President. Shortly after 1PM, the crowd surged toward Terminal 1B, breaching security in anticipation.Still, Gachagua had not appeared.
Moments later, the crowd was redirected to Terminal 1C, where he emerged at 1:55PM, flanked by senior DCP leaders. Pandemonium broke out as supporters jostled for a glimpse of their party leader.
After a brief wave to the crowd, the convoy embarked on a fraught journey to Kamukunji Grounds, the intended venue for a return rally that never materialized.
Along Mombasa Road, the procession met violent resistance with stones flying from a flyover with vehicles bearing the bruntJournalists were caught in the crossfire, with several press vehicles, including one from Standard Group damaged in the melee.
Police resorted to teargas to disperse rival factions.Amid the chaos, Gachagua slipped away, retreating to his Karen residence and leaving his allies to face the fallout.
The leaders are now demanding for accountability even as they vowed to defend Kenya’s democratic space.
