Migori Senator Eddy Oketch Gicheru has reaffirmed the Senate’s constitutional authority to oversee county governments, describing the mandate as non-negotiable and firmly anchored in law.

Speaking at the 2025 Devolution Conference in Homa Bay on Friday, August 15, Senator Oketch dismissed attempts to dilute the Senate’s role through political or administrative maneuvers, citing the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling on consolidated petitions 24 and 27 of 2019.

“The role of the Senate cannot be prescribed by anyone other than the Constitution and the court of law,” he said, stressing the judiciary’s importance in protecting institutional independence and safeguarding devolution.

Oketch pledged that the Senate would continue pushing for increased allocations to counties to strengthen grassroots service delivery while maintaining strict oversight over governors and county executives.

“We will fight for more money for counties, but in the same breath, we will continue to hold governors accountable to the optimal level,” he declared, adding that accountability and transparency remain non-negotiable pillars of governance.
