The country is reeling from the tragic death of 12-year-old Bridget Njoki Wainaina, who was shot and killed by a stray police bullet inside her family’s home in Ndumberi, Kiambu County, on the evening of July 7.

Bridget had spent the day at home due to the chaos triggered by the Saba Saba demonstrations.

She was with her family when a loud bang penetrated their home at around 6:20pm.

“It was past six when we heard the sound. I went to check on her and saw blood on her hands. I thought maybe something had scratched her, but then I saw a hole in her head, I screamed for help and her father rushed in,” her mother recounted, struggling through tears.

The family immediately took her to St. Bridget’s Hospital, but despite doctors’ efforts and hard work to bring her back and prepare for emergency surgery, she was pronounced dead. Her heart had already stopped.

Bridget’s death comes just days after another child, 12-year-old Kennedy Onyango, was also killed during the Gen Z protests on July 1.

He had stepped out to collect a book from a neighbor but was caught in the chaos. He was reportedly shot eight times.
