President William Ruto has announced the allocation of KSh800 million for the development of Nyamira University College in Nyamira County, in a move aimed at expanding access to higher education in the region.

According to the plan, KSh500 million will be used for the construction of core university infrastructure, while KSh300 million has been set aside for the development of student hostels to support accommodation needs once the institution becomes operational.

The project is expected to ease pressure on existing universities and increase access to higher learning opportunities for students within Nyamira County and surrounding regions.

“The construction of Nyamira University College will expand access to higher learning in the county and the wider region. To turn this vision into reality, we have committed KSh500 million to build the university and KSh300 million for student hostels,” Ruto said.

It is also anticipated to boost local development through job creation during the construction phase and increased economic activity once the institution opens.

Once completed, the university college will provide modern learning facilities and is expected to strengthen research, innovation, and skills training for students pursuing higher education.

Education stakeholders have welcomed the announcement, describing it as a significant step toward improving equity in access to university education and strengthening the country’s education infrastructure.

The initiative forms part of the government’s broader agenda to expand learning institutions and improve access to quality education across the country.
