Former premier Raila Odinga’s candidacy for the African Union Commission’s (AUC) chairperson position has received a significant boost after two more African presidents pledged to support him.

This is all thanks to President William Ruto’s lobbying, while in Ghana, where he traveled on Monday, January 6, to grace the inauguration ceremony of the country’s President-elect, John Dramani Mahama.

While in Ghana, Ruto held a meeting on the sidelines with Equatorial Guinea Vice-President Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue who pledged his country’s support for Raila’s AUC chairperson bid.

Also, President Ruto met with President Faure Gnassingbé of Togo, who pledged to vote for Raila in the polls slated for February 2025.

Raila will face off against his top rival, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf from Djibouti and Madagascar’s Richard Randriamandrato.

President Ruto has been instrumental in Raila’s campaigns, repetitively imploring African presidents to rally behind the Azimio leader during his foreign trips.
