Mugithi artist Samidoh has expressed deep sorrow following the passing of veteran pilot Col (Rtd) James Gitahi Nguyo, who tragically died after his vehicle collided head-on with an oncoming truck along the Mombasa Highway on Wednesday.

In a heartfelt tribute, Samidoh shared how the late pilot had taken him under his wing and mentored him in life.

“Today has been a tough day, receiving the worst news. A man who took me in as his own, cared for me, and shared some of the most meaningful conversations and worldviews is no more,” Samidoh said.

“Dad, it’s still hard to believe. I’ll miss your fatherly advice and your calm, soft-spoken nature. Fly high, Colonel (Rtd) James Gitahi.”

Gitahi, who was alone in his car, died instantly in the 5:30 p.m. crash, with his body suffering severe burns.

Col (rt) Gitahi’s car was completely burnt after the crash.

He was married to Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) nominated Senator Betty Batuli Montet and had a distinguished career as a military pilot.

Gitahi served as the personal pilot to President Daniel arap Moi for nearly two decades, starting in 1992, and later flew President Mwai Kibaki during his time in the military until 2010.

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi also mourned the loss of the veteran pilot, acknowledging his significant contributions to the country’s air transport industry.

Late pilot Gitahi’s wife Senator Betty Batuli Montet.

“Col Nguyo, a retired army officer, was a distinguished pilot who flew Presidents Daniel arap Moi and Mwai Kibaki, as well as many other prominent figures throughout his career. As a commercial pilot, Col Gitahi helped redefine air travel in Kenya, ensuring safe skies and mentoring the next generation of pilots.”
