More than 500 athletes are expected to compete in the fourth leg of the Athletics Kenya (AK) Cross Country Series, set to take place in Bomet this weekend.
The Bomet event follows previous legs in Machakos, Kapsokwony, and Iten, each of which has attracted strong participation.
According to AK Executive Committee member John Kimetto, the South Rift region has consistently been a hotbed of fierce competition, and this weekend’s race is expected to maintain that tradition.
Kimetto views Saturday’s race at Kapkwen Airstrip as a valuable opportunity for athletes to fine-tune their speed ahead of the upcoming track and field season.
He confirmed that all preparations are on track, with everything in place for the event.
Saturday’s program will feature several key races, including the senior 10km, Under-20 6km (women) and 8km (men), along with a 2km loop event.
This year’s Cross-Country Series has received a significant boost, with a Ksh 5 million sponsorship from betting company Betika, which is part of a broader Ksh 15 million contribution to this year’s Road to Tokyo events.
Winners in the senior categories will each take home Ksh 50,000, while junior category winners will be awarded Ksh 30,000 each. Athletes are required to pick up their bib numbers in person on Friday at the AGC Town Church in Bomet.
