Investigations into the assassination of Kasipul Member of Parliament Charles Ong’ondo Were have recorded a significant breakthrough after a ballistic report positively linked a recovered firearm to the bullets that ended his life on April 30.

Speaking to the media on Thursday, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja confirmed that a Sarsilmaz pistol, recovered from a suspect’s residence, was directly responsible for the fatal gunshots.

“The ballistics report we received unequivocally links the Sarsilmaz pistol recovered from the residence of one of the suspects to the fatal shots that took his life,” IG Kanja announced.

The firearm, along with a Retay Falcon pistol, a bag, and shoes matching those worn by a suspect seen at the crime scene, were recovered from suspects Edwin Oduor Odhiambo (alias Abdul Rashid) and Dennis Sewe Munyasi, who were arrested on Wednesday at an undisclosed location.

Autopsy results from May 2, conducted by Chief Government Pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor, revealed that MP Were suffered five gunshot wounds, all entering from the left side.

Two bullets were retrieved from his body and one from his vehicle — all of which matched the recovered pistol.

The same weapon has also been linked to three separate robbery incidents in Nairobi and Kiambu counties, heightening fears of a broader criminal network behind the assassination.

Further complicating the probe, detectives have so far detained ten suspects, including members of the feared “Mjahidini” gang, known for violent robberies in Nairobi’s Eastlands. Four suspects tied to the gang were arrested on May 4 and arraigned at the JKIA Court, where they were remanded for 30 days to allow further investigations. Their case will be mentioned on June 5.

Among those summoned by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) was Homa Bay politician and businessman Philip Nahashon Aroko, who appeared at the DCI headquarters on Wednesday and later surrendered at Gigiri Police Station, where he spent the night ahead of scheduled interrogations. His lawyer, Danstan Omari, confirmed the developments.
