The University of Nairobi Council has appointed Prof. Francis Mulaa as the Acting Vice Chancellor, effective May 5, 2025.
The appointment comes as the institution awaits the formal assumption of office by the incoming substantive Vice Chancellor, Prof. Bitange Ndemo.
Prof. Mulaa, who was recently appointed Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs), will serve in the acting capacity for six months or until Prof. Ndemo concludes his diplomatic posting as Kenya’s Ambassador to Belgium and officially takes up his role.

The announcement was made via an official memo signed by Prof. Amukowa Anangwe, Chairperson of the UoN Council, referencing the Council’s resolution under Minute No. 17 (ii) and (iii) of its 145th meeting.
“This decision is intended to ensure continuity and prevent any leadership vacuum following the end of Prof. Margaret Hutchinson’s tenure as Acting Vice Chancellor,” the memo stated.
Prof. Mulaa, a distinguished academic from the Faculty of Science and Technology, is expected to discharge the full responsibilities of the Vice Chancellor in line with the Universities Act 2012, the University Charter 2013, and other relevant government policies and circulars.
