Gabon defeated Harambee Stars 2-1 in a thrilling 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifier at Nairobi’s Nyayo Stadium.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s brace secured the win for Gabon, reinforcing their position in Group F of the qualifying tournament.

Aubameyang, now with Al-Qadsiah after his time at Arsenal, broke the deadlock in the 16th minute with a composed finish.

He doubled his tally with a penalty in the 57th minute, putting Gabon in control.

Kenya made a spirited attempt at a comeback when Michael Olunga scored just two minutes after Aubameyang’s penalty, but despite the late push, Harambee Stars couldn’t break down Gabon’s resilient defense.

Following the team’s 3-3 draw with Gambia, Kenya’s head coach Benni McCarthy made tactical changes, including starting key players like Mohamed Bajaber from Kenya Police, Wilson Lenkupae from Central Coast Mariners, and Al Duhail’s Michael Olunga.

The midfield trio of Antony Akumu, Richard Odada, and Timothy Ouma played a crucial role, while Gor Mahia’s Rooney Onyango anchored the defense.

McCarthy remains optimistic about the team’s future despite the loss. He expressed confidence that the squad would continue to improve, offering hope to the fans.

“Unfortunately, we couldn’t give the fans the joy they needed… something to celebrate at the end of the game, but what we can promise is that we will improve. We will get better… and they will have a team they can be very proud of,” said the South African coach.
