A Nairobi court has ordered the 14-day detention of Police Inspector Kenneth Sang over his alleged links to the murders of psychiatrist Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso and city lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu.
Sang, who was arrested in Eldoret on Saturday, appeared before Principal Magistrate Paul Mutai after the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) sought more time to complete investigations.
The court granted the request to allow investigators to interrogate the suspect, record his statement, conduct searches, pursue possible recoveries, arrange a mental health assessment and finalise investigations before charging him.
He will be held at Kilimani Police Station, with the case scheduled for mention on November 9, 2026.
Dr Mutiso, a former director of the African Institute of Mental and Brain Health, was fatally shot in Nairobi on July 29, 2026.
Investigators have also linked Sang to Mbobu’s murder on September 9, 2025. The prosecution alleges he played a key role in planning the lawyer’s killing and is expected to face charges alongside other suspects before the Kibera High Court.
Investigators reportedly recovered two spent cartridges and two bullets from Dr Mutiso’s murder scene. Ballistic tests linked the ammunition components to a Mini Jericho pistol issued to Sang.
The DPP has approved murder charges against five suspects in Mbobu’s killing, including Rose Mbithe Mulwa, her children Chris and Angela, and police constables Julius Kipkoeach Cheruiyot and Kennedy Kipkemoi Borboroi.
