Kenya’s Mary Muthoni Elected to Lead Continental Health Secretaries Body

Kenya’s influence in shaping Africa’s public health agenda has received a significant lift after the country’s Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards, Mary Muthoni, was elected chairperson of a key continental health leadership forum.

Muthoni was picked to head the body of African Permanent and Principal Secretaries for Health during a high-level consultative meeting held in Brazzaville, bringing together senior health officials to strengthen cross-border collaboration on health security.

The election of Muthoni into the leadership position has placed Kenya in a strong position to spearhead continental coordination efforts for responding to public health threats, especially in light of the increasing cooperation between member states for disease outbreak and emergency responses that transcend borders.

According to officials, the new position will help in improving cooperation between the African countries in disease surveillance, early warning systems and emergency response mechanisms. In addition, the new leadership position will facilitate the exchange of innovations and lessons learned on various health challenges.

For Kenya, the leadership position will improve the country’s health diplomacy profile in Africa and help it take a lead in developing partnership initiatives that aim at improving health systems in different countries.

The new leadership will also help in the continued efforts by the region to promote universal health coverage through building resilient health systems that can effectively respond to different public health threats while ensuring that citizens have access to basic healthcare services.

The new leadership will also help Africa pursue coordinated and collaborative leadership strategies in the fight against public health risks that threaten different communities in the continent.

With ongoing health concerns in countries, the new administration will be tasked with guiding collective efforts and ensuring that there is a more coherent approach in addressing health issues in the continent.
