The Mt. Kenya Kingpin Debate and Its Ripple Effect on Regional Development

Over 40 Members of Parliament from the Mount Kenya region have condemned recent acts of violence and destruction in the area, attributing the unrest to “reckless, selfish politics” and vowing to defend the region’s stability, development, and future.

In a strongly worded joint statement issued in Naivasha, the Mount Kenya Parliamentary Caucus mourned the loss of lives, livelihoods, and property during the recent unrest, which they say has deeply wounded communities across the region.

The lawmakers called for urgent investigations, prosecution of perpetrators, and accountability for those who may have financed or incited the chaos.

“This is not the Kenya we want,” the MPs said. “No cause, no political ambition, no grievance — however legitimate — should ever come at the cost of innocent lives.”

They condemned the targeting of key economic facilities in the region, including businesses that employ thousands of young people. “Such heinous sabotage only tears down our own house and future,” the statement read, noting that youth unemployment and investor confidence are already fragile.

The caucus expressed unwavering confidence in the Kenya Kwanza administration and reiterated their decision to work with the current government, asserting the region’s constitutional right to political association without intimidation or coercion.

“We are free citizens in a free country — and Kenya belongs to all of us,” the statement read. “Our people will work with whoever advances their interests and the national interest.”

The leaders warned against a resurgence of divisive politics and drew parallels with past episodes that threatened to derail national development, referencing the tenure of former President Mwai Kibaki, a respected figure from the region.

“As elected leaders, we have a sacred duty to safeguard the future of our people. We are determined to resist and defeat the toxic brand of politics that threatens to destroy the future we are building for our children and grandchildren,” they said.

The MPs affirmed their continued collaboration with the national government to deliver on development pledges including infrastructure upgrades, job creation, affordable living costs, and support for farmers and businesses.

They also called for greater national unity and urged Kenyans to reject political incitement and instead engage constructively to safeguard the country’s peace and progress.

“When Mount Kenya stands firm and united with the rest of Kenya, the whole nation stands stronger,” the statement concluded. “Our resolve is unshakable: to keep Mount Kenya at the heart of Kenya’s prosperity now and for generations to come.”
