Kenya has announced a bold strategy to transform its sugar sector into a diversified bio-economy and energy hub, signaling a major shift from traditional sugar production.

Speaking at the Informa Africa Sugar Conference, Jude Chesire, CEO of the Kenya Sugar Board and Chairman of the International Sugar Organization, said the country is repositioning the industry to unlock new value streams including bioenergy and other bio-based products.

“We are at an inflection point,” Chesire said, adding that Kenya is ready to lead Africa’s next phase of agro-industrial growth through a diversified and sustainable approach.

Chesire emphasized the need for stronger partnerships across the value chain and urged stakeholders to take advantage of the African Continental Free Trade Area to expand exports across the continent.

He noted that the shift aims to enhance competitiveness, sustainability, and resilience within the sector while creating new economic opportunities for farmers and investors.
