Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr has accused the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA) of frustrating counties with irregular supplies and inflated prices of essential drugs.

Speaking after the Supreme Court’s recent ruling allowing counties to seek alternative procurement avenues for medical supplies, Governor Mutula said the judgment should serve as a wake-up call to the government’s medical supplies agency.

He faulted KEMSA for failing to maintain a reliable order fill rate, a situation he argued has left counties struggling to meet the health needs of residents.“KEMSA is charging exorbitant prices for drugs, yet it is supposed to be serving the public good.

The institution must not be driven by profits, but should ensure that Health Products and Technologies are accessible and affordable,” Mutula said.

The governor added that KEMSA’s inefficiencies and pricing structure deny counties a competitive advantage compared to other suppliers in the market.

He urged the government to reform the agency to align with the devolved health system and support counties in delivering quality healthcare.
