Seven young men were arraigned in court today following the violent protests in Kikuyu town, Kiambu county, on June 25.
The demonstrations, which began as part of a nationwide call for accountability, took a chaotic turn that led to destruction and loss of property.
The accused are Sammy Ndung’u Kariuki (alias Ndoji), Simon Njoroge Hiuhu, Ali Shama Tabet, Lawrence Kariuki Ndung’u, James Njuguna Mwaura, Lewis Kariuki Njuhi, and Peter Njenga Ngina.
They face serious criminal charges, including robbery with violence, arson, shop breaking, and theft.
Prosecutors told the Kiambu Law Court that investigators needed more time to piece together the events of that night.
The court agreed, ordering the suspects to be detained at Kiambu Police Station for seven more days as investigations continue.
As the country continues to be filled with unrest fueled by economic and political tension, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the rule of law.
