President William Ruto on Friday wrote a heartfelt tribute in the State House condolence book for the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, describing him as a patriot who inspired “many to stand up for democracy, justice, equity, and fairness.”
In a poignant personal note that transcended years of political rivalry, Ruto wrote:
“You helped me when I needed someone to stand by me, just as I once stood by you. Baba, you may have departed, but we will work hard to honour what you stood for.”
The relationship between the two leaders was largely defined by fierce political competition, particularly during the 2022 presidential election, which Ruto won and Odinga contested in the Supreme Court. The court ultimately upheld Ruto’s victory.

Despite their differences, the two would later spearhead a bipartisan dialogue that paved the way for a more inclusive governance agenda — including the unprecedented appointment of opposition leaders to Cabinet roles.
Allies from both sides have described this cooperation as a turning point aimed at fostering national unity, deepening devolution, and stabilising the economy, while also helping to de-escalate political tensions that had previously spilled into the streets.
Raila Odinga, 80, passed away on October 15 while receiving medical treatment in India, triggering a nationwide outpouring of grief and the declaration of official mourning.
