Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has praised Raila Odinga despite his loss in the race for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship.

Djibouti’s Foreign Minister Mahmoud Ali Youssouf secured the position after receiving the required 33 votes, while Raila dropped out after the sixth round with 22 votes, compared to Youssouf’s 26.

In a heartfelt message on his social media platforms, Gachagua acknowledged Raila’s effort, saying, “Baba Raila Odinga, you fought bravely, demonstrating energy, resilience, and the indefatigable spirit of the Lion of Africa. You came in a credible second, proudly holding the Kenyan flag high in a fiercely contested race for the AUC chairmanship.”

Gachagua emphasized that Raila didn’t lose, but rather the majority had their way.

“The African and Kenyan spirit lives on. Your leap forward symbolizes the optimism and hope Kenya holds for the continent and the world,” he added.

He further reflected on the significance of Raila’s journey, saying, “Africa needed you most, but God, in His wisdom, has determined that Kenya, your motherland, and we, your beloved brothers and sisters, still have unfinished business with you, as we work together to lead our country toward greater success.”

Gachagua reassured that the loss did not diminish Raila’s leadership or determination to improve Kenya.

“Welcome back home, our son Raila Odinga, with your head held high. East or West, home is the best. Take heart, you did Kenya proud,” he concluded.
