The High Court has issued a directive compelling the Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, to immediately reinstate the security detail of former National Assembly Speaker Hon. Justin Muturi.

Delivering the ruling on Friday, Justice Chacha Mwita ordered that the security personnel assigned to Muturi be restored without delay and that there should be no interference with his protection until a petition he filed is heard and determined on June 24, 2025.

This comes after Muturi moved to court following the abrupt withdrawal of his security, which he argued was done unlawfully and without justifiable reason, potentially compromising his safety.

Justice Mwita emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law and the rights of individuals, noting that the court must first hear the substantive issues raised in Muturi’s petition before any changes to his security status can be enforced.”The Inspector General is hereby directed to reinstate and restore the security detail of Hon. Justin Muturi forthwith and ensure that the same is not withdrawn or interfered with in any other manner until the petition is heard on 24th June 2025,” the ruling stated.

The court’s decision underscores the growing scrutiny over the handling of VIP protection in Kenya, especially for former state officials.

Muturi, who served as Speaker of the National Assembly from 2013 to 2022 and later as Attorney General, is a prominent figure in Kenya’s political and legal landscape.

The case will now proceed to a full hearing in June, where the court will determine whether the withdrawal of his security was in violation of his rights and if any legal recourse should be granted.
