The Ministry of Health has issued a stern warning over the growing crisis of online gambling addiction among Kenyan youths.

In a statement released on April 21, the Ministry expressed urgent concern over the increase in cases linked to gambling platforms.

It described the trend as an emerging public health threat.

According to the Ministry of Health, what often begins as harmless digital entertainment has turned into a trap for many young Kenyans.

The Ministry drew attention to the addictive nature of online betting that causes financial hardship, mental health challenges, and even suicide.

Health officials associated gambling behavior with substance addiction due to the psychological grip it has on users.

“These platforms are deliberately designed to be addictive. They use manipulative techniques that keep users betting continuously,” the statement noted.

New data indicates that approximately 4.7 million Kenyans—about 17% of those aged 15 to 65—are struggling with substance use disorders.

In response, the Ministry has launched a Rapid Response Team to tackle the crisis.

Key measures include the establishment of a dedicated helpline for gambling addicts, deployment of counselors in learning institutions, and targeted public awareness campaigns.

The government is expanding support under the Social Health Authority (SHA). Rehabilitation and addiction treatment—previously uncovered—are now included in public health benefit packages.

This move ensures that affected individuals can access comprehensive care, including therapy and mental health services.
