Workable, a leading premium coworking operator in East Africa, has become the first coworking space in Africa to achieve the WELL Coworking Rating, marking a new milestone for health and wellbeing standards in the continent’s flexible workspace sector.
The Nairobi-based workspace received the rating from the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI) in partnership with The Instant Group.
The WELL Coworking Rating is a global standard developed specifically for coworking and flexible workspaces. It assesses measures designed to support the health and wellbeing of people using the spaces.
The rating covers 10 areas, including air, water, nourishment, light, movement, thermal comfort, sound, materials, mind and community.
According to Workable, the achievement reflects its focus on creating workspaces that support both productivity and the wellbeing of its members. The company operates its workspace at Sanlam | Allianz Tower along Waiyaki Way in Nairobi.
Workable Founder and CEO Samir Patel said the rating gives businesses operating from Nairobi a workspace that meets an international wellbeing benchmark.
“As global organisations increasingly hold their real estate to ESG and wellbeing standards, achieving Africa’s first WELL Coworking Rating gives our members a workspace that already meets that benchmark,” Patel said.
The achievement adds to Workable’s previous sustainability credentials. The company says its Nairobi workspace also holds EDGE certification for resource-efficient design and has continued to invest in wellness and sustainable workplace practices.
The WELL Coworking Rating was launched in October 2024 by IWBI and The Instant Group as a health and wellbeing benchmark specifically for coworking and flexible workspaces.
It was developed from strategies contained in the WELL Building Standard and covers more than 50 features across the 10 WELL concepts.
The rating comes as Kenya’s office market continues to see increased interest in flexible workspaces, with companies using coworking facilities for private offices, hybrid work and short-term space requirements.
Workable opened its first Nairobi floor in 2019 and has since expanded its workspace offering to additional floors at Sanlam | Allianz Tower.
The company said the WELL recognition strengthens its position in a market where businesses are increasingly looking at workplace conditions alongside cost, location and flexibility when choosing office space.
